Slice o life:

I walk into the backroom at work and there is a bowl of freshly picked hot peppers, habanera & jalapeno in greens, reds and yellows. The note says take some, so I do. Home. Dryer is broken – thoughts of repair. Jack Daniels t-shirt replaces work attire. Gin and tonic clinks in a glass. Two chicken breasts in the microwave on defrost, sliced jalapenos and split habanera thinly sliced. I once worked with a man from Dominica named Mel Gibson. He was older than the actor. His children loved his name. He taught me some of this. Glass pan, olive oil, & Uncle Ben’s garlic and wild rice on the front burner. Cover the chicken with salt and pepper, an onion and all of the hot peppers, a heaping teaspoon of minced garlic on each breast. In a bowl: one third a cup of soy sauce, a heaping tablespoon of brown sugar, a pinch of cinnamon (more) and nutmeg (less), a heaping tea of thyme (more again). Stir the mix and poor the sauce over the top of the chicken and peppers. Forty minutes at 300 in the gas oven, the last ten uncovered. Ladled with the broth over chicken and rice.
